Formal Garden

In this instance, the client wished for a complete rejuvenation of the existing garden. They favoured formal garden styles and so the plan was built around this concept. The garden was on a naturally level site, but a level change incorporating two to three steps was required.

The finished design exhibits several elements of a formal garden. There is a central, raised rectangular lawn, surrounded on three sides with standard Ligustrum trees and Euonymus under-planting. Moving outwards from the rear of the house, there is a large patio area bordered by raised beds. Two steps lead from the patio to the lawn and to a side seating area. A vista has been created from the patio to the bottom of the garden and the planting on both sides frames the view.

A restricted planting palette was intentionally used to strengthen the overall design and enhance uniformity.
