A Garden of Textures
The client brief in this instance, was to create a design that would suit the new extension to the house, which included a new access point through French doors. The design also had to cater for the family pet dog, who would be using the space just as much as the human residents. Alternative surfaces were requested to replace the lawn and a raised seating area was preferred.
The resulting design met the requirements of the client. The raised seating area is circular in shape, paved in sandstone and is bordered on either side by planted beds. The lawn was replaced with cream gravel, to maintain a permeable surface. However, in order to break up the area and make it more visually interesting, a series of sandstone setts radiate out from the raised circular seating area to the edge of the garden.
The threshold with the French doors is also paved with sandstone flags. As one moves away from the house into the garden, these flags loosen up and fade into the gravel surface
